I have a lot of questions and there are still some things I could have learned about the oil system, and now I know which oil is coming out of the engine to be honest. I don't have an engine problem (it's probably just the oil and piston ring thing), but I do have a lawn mower problem. I have two lawnmowers, one a '67 Chevy with the mower, and one a '87 Ford Mustang. I don't have the oil in either truck. I have the mower oil reservoir with the oil, and there is no oil in the reservoir so that's not the problem. I do have some oil coming out of the engine, but when I ran it to see if I could get some out, I figured it could be water and that's all I see in my intake. I've tried putting the mower on its side (a bad thing) and turning it over and the engine was still running normally. I also noticed when I have the engine running, that there is oil coming out of the muffler. Not all of it is oil, but not just oil either. For some reason it doesn't spray through the exhaust unless I turn the mower upside down. So, I'm guessing it's the piston ring or piston/cylinder ring. And there is oil again, but maybe not dripping on the mower. But just wondering now, what is it and is it the only problem with the mower? Or is it something to do with the engine, or the engine mounting? Or is there some other problem entirely?
Answer:
These are the symptoms and things to look for.
The oil on the mower will have a greasy odor and the oil coming out of the engine is typically black oily.
1. Hot engine. If the engine is overheated, then the engine is dirty. If it's cool to the touch, it sounds like an engine problem.
2. Engine misfire. Misfires are very common and I've seen them happen after lawn mowers that have been running for several years. To test for misfires, I have my lawn mower turn over to the side and then open the engine to see if there are any misfires. If there are none, the misfire is probably mechanical.
3. Engine misfire with stuck solenoid. This could be anything.
4. Engine misfire. If the engine is misfiring, that could be misfire due to a faulty ignition, a defective solenoid, or a faulty alternator.
5. Oil in engine. The oil in the engine is the most common place to find oil. If there is oil coming out of the oil reservoir, that is not going to be oil coming out of an engine. The engine will have a greasy oily smell and the oil in the engine is dark in color.
6. Oil coming out of exhaust. Oil coming out of the exhaust is dark in color, and it smells like it is oil. The engine is usually overheated and very dirty. The oil coming out of the exhaust is very dark in color.

Basically, the Oil & Performance Index
The Oil & Performance Index measures the oil in an engine and their
quality. The index is computed using the following formula:
index = (average engine oil weight in lbs / engine speed in rpm) /
0.3.
This is the only engine condition that tells you this: Average engine oil weight in lbs / engine speed in rpm) / 0.3 and, by extension, the quality of engine oil in the index.
A simple way to determine the quality of oil is with the Total Oil & Oil Quality Index (TOIQ):
TOIQ = ((Oil Temp / 100)/ engine speed in rpm)
In this video, I show you what the oil should look like at a given temperature. I have an oil temp of 210.0F but I use the oil on a lawnmower at room temperature. Based on this video, the oil should flow through the system at a rate of 0.33 gallons per minute (gpm). This makes the oil flow freely and will have a bright, white, shiny appearance.
If you have the right equipment, the oil, with the correct temperature and viscosity, will flow completely through the system and look like it is a clear, fresh oil.
You may be heating the engine, and that is the first place to look. An engine that is overheated, or cold, will be filled with fluid. There are two ways this can happen:
1. The fuel oil can go through cracks into the crank compartment and out the exhaust manifold.
2. The fuel tank can be full of fuel and the engine will burn at a high enough temperature that the tank is full, and the piston rings can be worn or you can turn the engine on its side. If the oil is black and has a high viscosity, it is in the cylinder block and not the crank case. You can check for this by running the engine at higher rpm (check temperature).
Note on #2-- the oil that is coming out of the exhaust manifold and from the crank case is not fuel oil going through the crank case, but oil that is not being consumed by the fuel pump. If it is a true vacuum, you should see a vacuum coming through the entire manifold. But it is a good idea to check for low-viscosity oil (slim, clear, very-thin) to rule out low-pump oil (you should see a "glow" from the fuel pump on the carburetor, if it is running.

On a serious note, I don't understand how NIST figures that a cupcake can be baked in a very thin paper or aluminum cup. How would the cup get too hot to bake?
My only thought was that it might be a cupcake made from some kind of paper that got sticky from sugar coating. For example, I used to see cupcake cakes on TV made of paper coated with sugar on the outside. The recipe didn't specify it, but because of this I assume that the cupcakes were made of the coating, and therefore sticky.
