A travel guide to Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory lying just off the U.S. mainland. The largest island is a republic because its two main islands, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands are each backed by a demilitarized zone, or DMZ. Puerto Rico lies southeast of the mainland, within a few miles of the Caribbean Sea; and the U.S. Virgin Islands are directly adjacent to Puerto Rico. The island is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Gulf Coast to the northeast, and to the south, the Caribbean Sea and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Puerto Rico is just under a million acres in size, is the second-most populated U.S. territory, and is home to the largest Spanish-speaking population outside of mainland Spain. Puerto Rico's capital, the city of San Juan, is the largest and most populous city on the island and was once called "The Paris of the Americas," due to the vast, richly textured history, culture, and architectural and urban development brought to the city during the last three centuries. Puerto Rico's economy is based on tourism, and most of the island's population is either expatriates or the children of expatriates. Puerto Rico's economy is one of the smallest in the Americas, consisting of a small commercial sector and an industrial sector.
